Equine Assisted Recovery
for Trauma Survivors and their families
My Story ~
September of 2009 ~ I was riding my horse, working on some basic cues. I have no memory of this as I came off the horse and landed on my head – no helmet and no attempt to break my fall (or so I was told). I became aware 3 weeks later in USC ICU. No memory of getting there (air lifted) no memory of visitors (although I have been told that I was able to answer questions and have slight conversations). Half my head shaved with a intercranial monitor inserted to record brain pressure. After thee weeks there I was transferred to a rehab hospital for 2 more weeks then to a transitional living center for 3 more weeks.
Now, 5 years later I do know that my recovery, while wonderful, is still not complete. My husband tells me that there are personal qualities that are “dialed up or down” just a bit. Not major, but noticeable. While in rehab I kept hearing that ” you will never get back where you were.” I don’t agree with that and I’m here to help other survivors and their families prove that wrong.
How we support you on your road to recovery ~
Working with horses, I support the client at they identify, accept and overcome the obstacles on their road to recovery. Each session is different and unique depending on the needs of the individual client or the needs of the family member(s). When you connect with a horse and learn something about yourself it is a magical moment and one you don’t forget easily.
The road to recovery from a TBI event is sometimes long and arduous. What I like to emphasize is to not look at things like “oh poor me, I can’t do that anymore….” but instead to look at the process as ” wow, this is different. Help me figure out how to overcome the glitch in my system.” And that is what we do… help YOU figure out how you need to do things perhaps a different way then you did before your TBI event. Life is not over ~ it’s just different. And can still be absolutely fabulous.
So come on out to Begin Again Ranch and let us help support you on your own personal road to recovery. Are you ready? The horses are waiting …
